Banknotes from Württemberg
The Württembergische Notenbank was one of the lates foundations of issuing banks in the German states. The legislation for the central German Reichsbank was already in place, when the decision for its creation was made. This was a step taken to keep decentralised control over the money in southern Germany within the boundaries of the new money laws.
The Württembergische Notenbank was founded by a state law on 24 July 1871. The bank articles were created on 1 September 1871. The state government gave the allowance to issue banknotes on 23 November 1871 and on 20 December 1871 the business was opened in Stuttgart (Friedrichstrasse 22). The bank was allowed to issue banknotes three times the value of its paid equity, but for a maximum of 15 million Gulden.
The first issue of the bank's banknotes is dated 15 November 1871. This issue was denominated in Gulden and bills of the value 10 and 35 Gulden were issued. Already by the end of 1872 the floating amount of Gulden banknotes from the Württembergische Notenbank came close to the allowed maximum of 15 million - showing the success of the bank.
The Württembergische Notenbank continued to issue banknotes after 1871 in Mark denominations - as shown on this page. It became one of the four largest state banks issuing banknotes, which continued to give out banknotes till 1935, when the Reichsbank was made the only authorised issuing bank in Germany.
