Banknotes before 1871 and the Mark
The common German currency Mark was only introduced after the
German unification in 1871. Before the different states in
Germany mostly had their own currency, coins and banknotes.
This page shows a few banknotes issued before 1971 in different states.
Saxony (Sachsen)
1 Reichs Thaler Saxony 1772
This note is a Churfürstliches Sächsisches Cassenbillet - a treasury bill of the prince elector of Saxony issued in Dresden.
The bill shows a hand written serial number.
This bill is dated 6 May 1772.

This bill is a Königlich-Sächsisches Cassen-Billet (Royal Saxon Treasury Bill) issued for the state Saxony. It is dated 2 March 1867.
Prussia (Preussen)
1 Thaler Courant Prussia 1809
This note is an undated Tresorschein from 1809. The issue of banknotes in Prussia had to be
stopped in 1806 after the defeat against Napoleon. From some years the Tresorscheine (literally:
vault bills) were issued until the financial system had been stabilised.
The bill shows a hand written serial number. The text on this bill is:
Tresorschein von einem Thaler in Courant nach dem Münzfuß von 1764.
Geltend in allen Zahlungen für voll.
(Tresorschein for one Thaler currency based on the coinage system from 1764. Valid in all
payments for the full amount.)

This bill is a Kassenanweisung. The Tresorscheine were replaced by this type of bill in 1824 in
Prussia. It was issued by the Königlich-Preussische Hauptverwaltung der Staatschulden
