The company Phönix AG für Bergbau und Hüttenbetrieb was a mining and steel plant. The firm was founded in Eschweiler in 1852 gegründet.
In 1908 the headquarters were moved to Dortmund and in 1921 to Düsseldorf.
Initially founded as a steel company the firm took over mining operations in the Ruhr valley during the imperial era -
following a trend of vertical integration in the steel and mining industry at that time.
The company was merged into the Vereinigte Stahlwerke AG in 1926.
