Notgeld Glashütte (Sa.) 1923

Glashütte is a city in the German state Saxony. Today the city has a population of about 4,700.
The settlement was first mentioned in a document around 1445. The discovery of silver ore caused a fast economic development. In 1506 Glashütte was given town rights. The ore mining was the main eceonomic activity until the late 19th century, when the mines where exhausted.
In 1845 the watch maker Ferdinand Adolph Lange came to Glashütte. He is the founder of the watch making tradition in the town. From 1975 watch making and fine mechanical industry became the main stay in Glashütte.
Until German reunification in 1990, the city belonged to the German Democratic Republic (East Germany).
