During World War 1 the German military forces occupied wide
areas in central and eastern Europe. From 1916 the Ostbank für Handel und Gewerbe -
Darlehnskasse Ost (Eastern Bank for Trade and Commerce - credit bank East) based in Posen (Poznan)
issued Darlehnskassenscheine to ensure the money
supply within the occupied areas. The exchange rate to the Russian "Rouble" was fixed at 2 Roubles
for 1 Mark.
From 1918 additionally Darlehnskassenscheine denominated in Mark
where issued for the occupied Eastern territories by the Ostkasse based in Kowno.
After the establishment of the baltic republics in 1918 this money was abolished in Estonia and Latvia.
It was used, however, in Lithuania until 1922.
