The Kingdom Romania entered the Great War on 27. August 1916 on the side of the Entente cordiale.
Initially it occupied the German-Hungarian area of Transylvania. Soon the German and Austrian troops,
however, made up against the Romanians and occupied their country. The money supply was managed by the
Banca Generala Romana, which was affiliated with the Reichsbank. Until 1918 it issued the local
currency “Lei”.
