Reutergeld
A very famous German Notgeld series is the "Reutergeld". It is named after Fritz Reuter (1810 - 1874),
who was a poet and writer attached to the Northern German province of Mecklenburg. He wrote many
of his works in the local North German dialect.
The Reutergeld was an idea of Max Reinhold Wulst. He wanted to issue a series of Notgeld in
recognition of Fritz Reuter. 70 towns across Mecklenburg followed his call and each issued three
notes of 10, 20 and 50 Pfennig. The notes were designed by local artists. They show illustrations and quotes from Reuter's works.
None of these bill were real emergency money, as they were only issued for collectors. The notes were actually given out in 1922 on a day after the end of the validity period (as printed on the notes) to avoid any claims.
