Grading

To describe the condition of old paper money a grading system has been developed. This grading scale is valid for all banknotes and not only for those from Germany.

UN - Uncirculated: a perfect banknote
AU - About Uncirculated: an almost perfect note that has been counted, but not seen extensive use - no crease and folds
XF - Extremely Fine: a very attractive note showing some light handling - some light folds and corners may show slight rounding - paper should be clean
VF - Very Fine: an attractive banknote showing some more wear - several folds vertically and horizontally - paper may have some dirt but should not be floppy - no tears but slight wear on edges and corners
F - Fine: a desirable note circulated significantly - many folds, creases and wrinkling - paper is not excessively dirty but soft - edges show much handling - minor tears in the border only - no holes from handling but possibly staple holes
VG - Very Good: a well used note - no pieces missing - corners show much wear and rounding - tears go into the design - paper with discoloration or staining and limp - a small hole at centre from excessive folding
G - Good: a well used and heavily circulated banknote - normal damage from prolonged circulation - multiple folds and creases, stains, pinholes and/or staple holes, dirt, discoloration, edge tears, centre hole, rounded corners - no large pieces missing
P - Poor: a note with severe damage
