Concentration Camp Money (Lagergeld) Oranienburg
The Oranienburg camp was the first concentration camp created by the Nazis in Germany. It was opened already in 1933 and played a key part in the persecution of the opposition.
The money of Oranienburg camp was designed by one of the first prisoners in the camp: Horst-Willi Lippert. Lippert was a graphical artist and anti-fascist. We was ordered to produce the notes under Nazi control. The powerful design shows scenes of the camp life in a bold expressionist style.
Oranienburg was the first camp to issue specific money to the prisoners. It was a prototype for the other camps to follow, althought the quality of the money issued in other camps was mostly worse.
