Deutsche Bank Shares
Deutsche Bank was founded in Berlin in 1870. The opening of branches in Bremen and Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main, Munich, Leipzig and Dresden followed in quick succession. In 1873 the first European foreign branch was opened in London.
The first acquisitions were carried out in 1876 through buying the Berliner Bank-Verein and Deutsche Union-Bank. The abnk expanded further in Germany through the acquisition of other regional insitutions until the 1920’s. Since 1880 Deutsche Bank starts its industrial sponsoring and investment activities with investments in North and South America, Eastern Asia, and Turkey.
A merger of Deutsche Bank with Disconto-Gesellschaft in 1929 brought the biggest ever merger in German banking history till then.
After World War 2 the head office in Berlin and of all branches in the Soviet-occupied zone were closed. Deutsche Bank is run by its Hamburg management. In the Western occupation zones, Deutsche Bank is split up into separate independent banks. It is further reduced by the Allies - first into ten and then into three institutions. In 1957 a re-amalgamation of the three successor banks form Deutsche Bank AG, with its registered office in Frankfurt am Main.
From 1959 Deutsche Bank start its retail banking operation in Germany by introducing small personal loans. Since 1970 the bank pursues a strategy of internationalising of its business; offices are opened at new locations such as Moscow, London, Tokyo, Paris and New York.
More mergers and aquisitions follow: in 1986 - Banca d´America e d´Italia (the first time the bank acquires a sizeable branch network in another European country), 1989 - Morgan Grenfell Group (international securities business and expanded presence on the important London capital market), 1999 - Bankers Trust in the U.S.A., 2002 - US asset manager Scudder Investments.
