German Mining Shares
Mining - the extraction of mineral and materials from earth - is one of the oldest industries.
While exploration and mining was sometimes conducted by individuals or small businesses,
most modern-day mines are large enterprises requiring large amounts of capital to establish.
Mostly this capital is collected from mutiple investors in the form of shares.
The first documents about mining in Germany date back to the 8th century Bohemia. The
industrialisation caused in Germany - as elsewhere - a massive increase in mining activity of
coal and iron. Centres of mining activity became the Ruhr area and Silisia.
The geological conditions in Germany for iron and coal mining are tough. Therefore it became
soon cheaper to import these raw materials from abroad. Therefore mining activity today is
concentrated on lignite and salt.
