Oesterreichisch-Ungarische Bank
The peace treaty of St. Germain concluded World War 1 for Austria by settling the peace terms. The Austrian-Hungarian Empire was to be dissolved into many independent states - Austria and Hungary being the two main countries. With the split up of the empire the treaty also called for a liquidation of the Oesterreichisch-Ungarische Bank. In Austria the bank was controlling the money supply until 1923, when it was replaced by the Oesterreichische Nationalbank. In the other states of the empire the activities of the bank ceased years earlier.
The banknotes of the Oesterreichisch-Ungarische Bankthat were used in the whole empire at the end of the war stayed in circulation initially. In those states that were separated from Austria and Hungary the bills were stamped to avoid the inflow of banknotes from other regions. Here the Oesterreichisch-Ungarische Bank was soon replaced by newly formed banks that took over the money control in their respective areas (e.g. the newly founded state of Czechoslovakia).
The Oesterreichisch-Ungarische Bank in Austria had a similar problem than the separated territories - it needed to control the back-flow of money from areas not under its control to avoid the dilution of its money. Therefore the bills in Austria were overprinted with a mark and the signature “Deutschösterreich” (German Austria). From March 1919 (for 1 and 2 Kronen bills from September 1920) only the overprinted versions of these bills were valid anymore.
